Chapter Reports: Busy Bees

2016 Reports

October 2016

The Arizona heat certainly has not affected the buzzing of the Busy Bees Hive. In addition to our regular business meetings, we have had some great activities. In June, Bobbi Levy-Dodge gave an informative demo on Inserting a Flange and Joyce Heuett gave a class on a quilt block that she had learned at a recent quilt camp. At our class/sew day in July, we had A Christmas in July Hands-On Gift Class with instructions on a Mug Rug, a Checkbook Cover, and a Sewing Machine Cover from Sandy Steele, Sharon Lichter and Louise Grant respectively, plus we feasted on a delicious Salad Potluck. Also, in the month of July, Joyce Anderson was our Quilter of the Month and treated us to a wonderful Trunk Show. Numerous lovely quilts and quilted items were shown that she has quilted or acquired from family members throughout her quilting years: a life history quilt, a hand-quilted whole cloth quilt, a Hoffman Challenge quilt, and a Jacobean applique' quilt to list only a few. In August, the President's Challenge (Out On A Limb) quilts, wallhangings, etc were revealed. It was fun and interesting to see the various interpretations of this challenge. Our class/sew day held just recently in September was "Houses". Joni Lancaster conducted this class and brought in numerous patterns or you had the option to use one of your own choosing. We look forward to seeing what each participant has chosen to contruct.

On the upcoming agenda are: a class on Potholders, a demo on a Christmas Card Holder, a 50's themed Sack Luncheon with Root Beer Floats , 2 Quilter of the Month Trunk Shows, a Charity Workshop, a Holiday Block Lotto and our annual Holiday Party. "Candy Canes and Holly" is the theme for this years Holiday Party. This event is always a great way to close before the Holidays.
With sadness, I must report that we lost 3 of our quilting sisters within the past few months: Carol Simpson on May 11th, Jean Allen on May 21st, and June Armstrong on June 11th. All three women, longtime members, were in their early 90's when they passed but remained active with chapter activities until their final days. We will miss our fellowship with each of them but will cherish the memories.

The Busy Bees hold their business meetings on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. We meet at The Westown Baptist Church, 11415 N. 35th Avenue. Please visit our website at busybeequilters.shutterfly.com for more information on our chapter. We welcome visitors and new members.

May 2016

In March, The Busy Bees had a great class given by member, Sharon Lichter. She taught us how to make "A Pick A Posey Tote Bag", and even gave a demonstration for an inlaid pocket with a zipper. Numerous colors of fabric were chosen by everyone and it was so fun to see the finished bags at Show and Tell. Sharon has made so many beautiful clutches, purses, bags and totes; and we were thrilled that she shared one with us. Thank you, Sharon!! Our Quilter of the Month for March was Joni Lancaster. Of course, we all so enjoyed her Trunk Show at our Business Meeting, lots of "oohs" and "awes"! Joni is amazing at her color selection in her quilts and often helps other members with their choices as well.

The Bees have been very busy buzzing around for the past couple of months, preparing for our Garden Party Social, held on April 6th. It was a fun, fun event and we were delighted to have as our guests, The Foothills Quilters, our Sister Chapter. There were door prizes, a raffle for wonderful gift baskets, a game (Left, Right, Center) using fabric strips, and a "yummy" luncheon. One of our desserts was a "Dirty Pudding" which looked like a little potted plant with little "worms"!!?? Don't ask; but it was delicious! Before we adjourned, members from both chapters shared their garden themed quilts and other sewn items. It was a wonderful day gathering with fellow quilters; the buzz of the chatter and laughter was such a pleasing, happy sound.

On our calendar for the upcoming months are classes on a Foundation String Quilt (to coincide with a Charity Day), a Scrap Quilt, Quick Gifts, and Attic Windows.

Even though Arizona's warmer months and summer are right around the corner, The Busy Bees remain "busy and buzzing"! We have our Business Meetings on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. We welcome visitors and new members. Please visit our website at: busybeequilters.shutterfly.com to see our schedule and for more information on our chapter.

March 2016

Things are alive and buzzing in the Busy Bee Quilters hive with all the 2016 activities now in full motion. Two Blocks of the Month have been started: (1) a calendar wall hanging, and (2) a folk art applique quilt, using your choice of method of applique. The completed blocks are due each month at our class day in order to receive the next month's block. It will be fun to see the completed blocks and to follow each other's choice of colors, etc. Our President's Challenge this year is entitled "Out On A Limb", any size or form of project accepted. It will be so interesting to see the participant's interpretation of this challenge. But, we will have to wait as it is not due until later in the year.

At our January meeting, our Quilter of the Month was Ada Coffelt, also an AQG Traveling Teacher. She gave a great Trunk Show with a wonderful assortment of quilts that she has made throughout the years. We are so happy that she has chosen to call The Busy Bees her home chapter with all of her skills.

Our class in February, A Log Cabin Heart Quilt, was given by Nancy Goins. It was a fairly easy, basic block, but the trick was in the RIGHT color sequence, the RIGHT strip size, and the RIGHT lay-out. If you got all this RIGHT, the finished quilt was great. Do I have to tell you that there was a little bit of having to use that ole' seam ripper in order to get it RIGHT??!!

At our February business meeting, Louise Grant will be doing a demo on Pillow Wraps. I am sure that we will be coming home with different, seasonal decorating ideas. We also look forward to our March class to be given by Sharon Lichter, A Pick A Posey Tote Bag. Sharon continues to amaze the chapter with her wonderful bags.

In the Busy Bees Chapter, we feel we must recognize a certain member, Peggy Haff. Peggy is basically a charity quilter and sewer. She produces at least approximately 150+ quilts a year, crib to lap size, to be given to the various charities that the chapter supports, numerous bags for The Beads of Courage Program for Children's Hospital, plus an assortment of stuffed animals and dolls for The Shriners' Hospital in Salt Lake City. Peggy is truly an inspiration with her loving, giving, selfless attitude to those around her and to those in need. Thank you, Peggy, for the many lives that you touch each day with your dedication to helping others. (Also, I have to add, that she supplies us with wonderful baked goods on our class days.)

Our chapter welcomes visitors and new members. Our chapter meetings are on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. Please visit our website at busybeequilters.shutterfly.com to see our schedule and for more information about The Busy Bees.

January 2016

The Busy Bees are looking forward to another great quilting, fun filled year. On Wednesday, January 6, 2016, normally a program/class day, we will be having a "brainstorming" session to organize our activity calendar for the new year. Already on the calendar, is our first chapter meeting for 2016, to be held on Wednesday, January 20th; also scheduled is another visit to The Estrella Estates Retirement Home on January 21st for lunch with our member, Jean Allen. Again, we will be taking quilts for a small Show and Tell for the residents of the home. On January 29th, a Road Trip is planned. We will traveling to Wickenburg for the Vulture Peak Patchers Quilt Show. Our schedule will change this year. We will be gathering only 2 times a month. On the first Wednesday of each month, we will have our program/class day, and our chapter meetings will now be held on the third Wednesday of each month. We look forward to having visitors, and of course, we welcome new members. Please visit our website at http://busybeequilters.shutterfly.com to see more information about our chapter.
