Director: Website Communications

Kimberly Murray

Kimberly (Kimm) claims to be relatively new to the AZ quilting scene; she joined AQG in 2014.  She describes the Night Owls chapter as “a whole room full of wonderful friends who are as obsessed with quilting as I am!”

Kimm completed her first quilt in 1998, and when someone asks Kimm what she likes best about making a quilt, she answers: All of it! (except maybe the basting.)  There is the hunt and selection of fabric, and the joy when finding a bolt (or a big remnant) of the perfect fabric.  There is the creative challenge of the design process, the nerves when slicing through that beautiful fabric, and the thrill as the patchwork starts to become a quilt top.  There is the trial of mating the quilting to the patchwork so that both accentuate each other, then the peaceful therapy of executing the quilting stiches, and finally the satisfaction of sewing the binding onto the finished project.  And there is even forgiveness to be found in the seam ripper – a chance to fix a mistake before it becomes permanent.  As a hand quilter, she embraces and promotes The Slow Stitching Movement core concept:  slow down, enjoy the process, and create a quilt of which you can be proud.

Kimm is a geophysicist by education and continues to work full time as a Research Specialist (a.k.a. computer geek) at Arizona State University, Tempe Campus.  She accepted the position as AQG Communications Director because she saw it as an opportunity to use her non-quilting skills to make a positive impact in this community.
