We reported last month that Havasu Stitchers were donating to the Black Gold Quilt Guild through Lucille Bush for the families left homeless in Fort McMurray, Canada. Unfortunately, the cost of customs made it prohibitive for the donations to get to Canada.

Instead, our project chairman, Carolyn Walters, had a better idea.

As many of you know, in August 2016, prolonged rainfall in southern parts of Louisiana resulted in catastrophic flooding that submerged thousands of houses and businesses. As a result, the Havasu Stitchers voted to forward the donated quilts to the victims of the Louisiana floods. Over 60 quilts have been donated. Members, including Susan Black, Linda Higuera, Eileen Johnson, Peggy Wilson, Carolyn Walters, Cathy Geer, and friends, Karen Wilber, Rebecka from California and many others contributed to the project.

Congratulations to the members nominated for the Havasu Stitchers Member of the Year - Kevin Cabbage, Bonnie Fryer, Dianna Stebbens, and Linda Visnaw. Voting will take place at our October meeting and the winner will be announced in November.

September 2016

We are enjoying our Havasu weather! And like many quilt guilds across the country, the Havasu Stitchers are donating quilts.
Many of you may remember the Fort McMurrary wildfire last May through July, which was a large wildfire burning in Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada. On May 1, 2016, the wildfire began southwest of Fort McMurray, Alberta. On May 3, it swept through the community, destroying approximately 2,400 homes and buildings and forcing the largest wildfire evacuation in Albertan history. Thousands were left homeless and left with only what they were able to carry with them.
The Havasu Stitchers have donated more than 25 quilts which will be shipped to the Black Gold Quilt Guild through Lucille Bush, then on to Fort McMurray, Canada. We hope the quilts will give local families some comfort during the rebuilding of their homes and lives in Fort McMurray.
We are continuing to collect these quilts and at our September 2016 meeting, our chairman, Carolyn Walters, will accept the last batch of quilts.
We proudly invite you to Lake Havasu City for six days of fun in the sun. Join us at Quilting at the Lake 2017 at the London Bridge Resort on January 3, -8, 2017!

April 2016

Havasu Stitchers celebrate National Quilt Day!

Members of the Havasu Stitchers recently celebrated National Quilt Day at the Quality Inn in Lake Havasu City.

Entry into the show was one canned item for Interagency and we were able to donate two large buckets of canned items to the charity.

Our own Phyllis Barton presented a wonderful bed turning presentation and shared the very interesting history of quilts.

We held an Indoor Garage Sale where one sewer’s extras are another sewer’s treasures!

Thanks to the members of our Connecting Thread group for their volunteer assistance in working the sale.

Our First Vice President Geri Larson taught the Simply Woven Quilt.

Community Outreach participated and we had demonstrations from Audry King showing the Toothbrush Rug Making and Geneva Horning with Back Basting Applique.

And, of course, no National Quilt Day would be complete without a mini Quilt Show. It was a great event to show Lake Havasu City the importance of quilts in our community. Thank you to the members who volunteered their time and efforts for a successful National Quilt Day!

February 2016

Elaine and Dale posed in front of one of our charity quilts, which was pieced by member Jeanette Kennedy and quilted by member Kevin Cabbage of Cabbage Patch Quilting. The quilt will be donated to Denise’s Day for a local cancer fundraiser in March 2016. Denise’s Day has been raising money for local families battling cancer since 2010 in remembrance of Denise Madrid, who lost her battle with cancer.

Congratulations to Sarah McNary! We previously reported that Sarah was awarded the Arizona Hall of Fame ribbon for her Blue Water Moonrise, one interpretation that developed in the crafting of the original design for the Havasu Stitchers 2015 Bridge of Friendship Opportunity Quilt. Sarah’s quilt was selected by the jury as one of the quilts for the Simply Southwest exhibit at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky.
