Chapter Reports: Cactus Patchers

2016 Reports

October 2016

Cactus Patchers had a great September program meeting! Not only did we have 4 guests – 2 of them joined! Attendance is up as Fall approaches and word gets around about the fun projects we have lined up.

The September program was a fantastic trunk show by Carol Dimpsey, who is also a member of Nimble Thimbles and the Modern Quilt Guild. Carol has been quilting for a little over 20 years and her progress is amazing. She is mostly self-taught, working from patterns and using the sewing skills she acquired early in life. There were some quilters in her family, but they were long gone by the time she took up the craft. Carol was, however, inspired by the work that still exists today of those family members. Starting with full size bed quilts, she primarily hand quilts her projects. Landscape and art quilts are a new venture for Carol that will expand her talents and she hopes to advance her skills in that arena. As a side note, she also works on embroidery projects. We’re proud to have her as a member!

We’ve been having great success with our raffle baskets and Carlene Nimblett was the lucky winner of the Sept basket. The basket included enough patriotic fabrics to make a Quilt of Valor top. Thank you Jane Phoenix for your donation of the basket and we look forward to seeing what Carlene creates.

Show n Tell at our Sept 13th meeting was an awesome display of progress our members have been making. There were 9 members with great projects to share and inspire, some of which are pictured here.

Friendship Meetings are the 4th Tues of each month and on Sept 27, Nancy Parlova is leading a make and take project. We’ll be making tree napkins in various sizes – adult lap, child lap, tree ornament and dolly size (great for 18” dolls). These would make great gifts for the upcoming holidays, or keep for yourself.

Coming up October 11: “You” are the Program – Tips & Tricks. Members will bring their tips to share and any special technique that is helpful to the quilting process.

Cactus Patchers meet the 2nd & 4th Tues of each month (except Nov and Dec, when we meet 2nd Tues only). Meetings are at the Pyle Adult Recreation Center, 655 E. Southern Ave, Tempe, AZ from 6:30pm – 8:30pm (doors open 6pm). Check out our Facebook page or blog (cactuspatchers.blogspot.com) for updates. Guests are always welcome and we’re open to new members.

September 2016

In mid-July, Cactus Patchers had a retreat to Bear Cabin Inn in Show Low. There were only 4 Cactus Patchers available for the dates reserved, so we extended an invitation to Prickly Piecers, Quilters Anonymous and Nimble Thimbles. Almost overnight, we went from having only 4 attendees, to maxed out at 12 (thank you everyone for participating). New friendships were created, many ideas were exchanged and lots of projects were worked on. The weather was cool (with only couple of light rain showers) and the food was outstanding. Everyone is looking forward to returning next year.

We had a full house for the August program/business meeting (with 3 new members signing up). Barb Janson was the guest speaker and her presentation, ‘Under African Skies’, was a big hit. Barb provided an interesting history and her quilts were amazing.

After the presentation, we had a brief but packed business meeting. A president’s challenge, ‘America the Beautiful’, was offered to members and 16 have committed to participate. The challenge is to create a wall hanging to be 18” – 36” wide, must include at least 1 pieced block and use at least 25% patriotic fabric. The finished projects will be presented at the December meeting and prizes will be awarded. Then in March, they will be hung as a group at the AQG Quilt Show – Salute America!

The Cactus Patchers are excited to be one of the AQG Fall Meeting Hosts and we have a committee working on centerpieces. We’re also assisting Nimble Thimbles on some awesome favors. Make sure you sign up for Fall Meeting – everyone gets a favor and you don’t want to miss a chance at winning a centerpiece – go to azquiltersguild.org to sign up!

In September, we go back to our normal schedule of meetings! We meet the 2nd & 4th Tues of each month (except Nov and Dec, when we meet 2nd Tues only) at the Pyle Center, 655 E. Southern Ave, Tempe, AZ from 6:30pm – 8:30pm (doors open 6pm) – guests are always welcome! Check out our Facebook page (Cactus Patchers) or blog (http://cactuspatchers.blogspot.com) for updates.

August 2016

Cactus Patchers wrapped up their 2015-2016 fiscal year with our annual Party in May!
During the year we completed 10 quillows for the Banner Desert Medical Center, Oncology
Chemo
Department. The
quillows were
welcomed by
patients to help
stay warm during
their treatment.
We had Jennifer Wilson as our guest speaker this year from the ‘Quilts of Valor’. We will be
making Quilts of Valor for our 2016-2017 community service project. The quilts will be given to
Jennifer for presentation to military recipients.
For those that missed our July program we had Betty Johnson, a former Cactus Patcher, visit and
she presented a fabulous trunk show. We are happy to announce Betty will be re-joining the
group.
We’re working on some great programs and fun friendship events for the coming year, so join us
as a guest and see how much fun we have – you’ll surely want to join!
