2016 Reports

May 2016

VPP recently held elections for our officers for next year. The newly elected board members are: Chairman: Judy Getch; Vice Chairman, Elaine Hamm; Programs: Kathy Anderson; Treasurer: Kathy Van Winkle; Secretary: Virginia Northington; Membership: Jane McCabe.

At our last meeting we enjoyed Jo VanLoo’s Crazy Quilt Trunk Show and embroidery lessons. This was a very timely presentation as we have recently decided to make a crazy quilt as our next Opportunity Quilt.

“FUN DAY” was attended by 23 VPP members. Our Comfort Quilt Leaders pre-cut and packaged kits to start work on 30 burpads, 15 receiving blankets, and 20 small quilts. Everything was ready to go in the morning and kept everyone busy throughout the day.

VPP’s Hartley Bennet led a family activity at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum on Saturday, April 9. Plant or Flower Pounding was enjoyed by many including the five VPP members who assisted Hartley.

Loralie Harris of Loralie Designs will give an Autobiography Trunk Show at our meeting on Thursday, May 5th. We’ll have our regular business meeting that starts at 9:00am, and then Loralie’s presentation at 10:00am. Come join us and enjoy this delightful woman and her fun fabrics.

March 2016

It’s been a busy year so far for VPP members. The entire month of January was spent getting ready for our quilt show held on Jan. 29th and 30th. We thank everyone who came to the show and helped to make it so successful. We hope you had a great time, enjoyed all the beautiful quilts, and took advantage of the fantastic weather to visit the local businesses who were so supportive of our show. One of our members, Caryl Spenny, taught a bargello class last year, so bargellos were in abundance at the show, as you can see from the attached pictures.

Desert Caballeros Western Museum gave show attendees free admission that weekend to see their vintage quilt display at the Museum’s Learning Center. Throughout 2016, the antique quilt display will be changed every three months to showcase different quilts from their collection. So come back and visit our town again.

Our opportunity quilt was won by N. Howe of California, and she was very excited when Kathy Anderson called to tell her she had won. Thanks again to everyone who bought tickets for the quilt.

Just because our show is over doesn’t mean we get to rest on our laurels. It’s time to start a new Opportunity Quilt for our next show in 2018, which is always exciting. We will also be busy for several months helping the Museum stabilize the quilts for their future displays. This has been an ongoing collaboration between the Museum and VPP, and has been very educational and exciting for our members.

At our guild meeting on February 4, 2016, Hartley Bennett, a VPP guild member, taught her flower pounding technique. She has made many fantastic quilts using this technique. One of her quilts won first place in the Art Quilt category at our recent quilt show.

We are looking forward to attending the AQS Show in Phoenix Friday, Feb. 12th. Several of our members are excited to volunteer at that show. It will be the first time for many of us to see a national show. We can’t wait.

February 2016

VPP is getting ready for their Quilt Show the end of the month. We are excited to have Wickenburg Los Cabaleros Museum join with us with a special presentation for those who come to our show. They are featuring many antique quilts in their learning center and look forward to having many visitors. In preparation VPP members are having a work day to put finishing touches on the quilts they are entering in the show. We also had another Fun Day on New Years eve, creating close to 20 lovely quilts for Linus Project and many burp pads for the local Crisis Pregnancy Center. All in all it was a great day.

January 2016

VPP welcomes all of you to join us on January 29 and 30, 2016 for our Wickenburg Quilt Show, “Desert Stars,” at the Wickenburg Community Center, 160 N. Valentine, Wickenburg, Arizona. Admission is $5.00 (children free), 9am – 4pm.

We’re excited to let you know that your paid admission to the Wickenburg Quilt Show entitles you to free admission to the Desert Caballeros Western Museum’s exhibit of eight of their vintage quilts from the turn of the century at the Museum’s Learning Center. It will be a bonus day – come view our beautiful quilts and participate in the fun.

And, let’s not forgot January 21, 2016, when the Museum will host a free one hour talk on January 21, 2016 at the Leaning Center: Gail Van Horsen will discuss the Museum’s quilt collection; Kathie VanWinkle will speak on quilting today, and Hartley Bennet will share her beautiful flower pounding method and how she uses this in her quilts.

So join us January 21, 2016 for the one-hour free talk, and for our Quilt Show on January 29 and 30, 2016. We’re looking forward to seeing you all there!
